•••Before co-founding FreeAgent, Roan has worked as an interface designer, condensed matter scientist and removal man. As a result, he's fascinated by the intersection between level-headed business reasoning and heart-felt emotional design, and always remembers to lift with the knees.
As FreeAgent's Product Director he stubbornly refuses to accept managing finances can't be fun, by driving improvements in one of the world's most popular online accounting apps.
In the last 15 years we've witnessed the birth and explosion of the start up culture.
And technology has been the great enabler. The barriers to entry when creating a new business are now lower than ever. Technology has all allowed us to start businesses in our garages and grow them to billion dollar winners in a matter of a few short years. It allows us to connect and engage our customers instantly, and enables those customers to spread awareness of our companies, products and services even further.
And yet there's a problem. For all these advances in technology, and the occassional high profile success stories, most new businesses still fail. So why is it that, despite it being easier and cheaper than ever to start a business, most won't survive beyond the first few years?
Now, the reasons why businesses fail are many and varied but I think it's clear that the incredible progress in technology won't guarantee our sucess. Technology isn't enough. I believe there's a missing ingredient, which is what I want to talk about today.
Roan is the co-founder and Product Director of FreeAgent, the online accounting application for freelancers and small businesses.
